Our first US meeting, held at Columbia University in New York was followed by TAG at Stanford University in 2009.  Since then meetings have been held at Brown University, UC Berkeley, SUNY Buffalo, University of Chicago, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, NYU, the University of Colorado at Boulder, the University of Toronto, the University of Florida, Syracuse University and Stanford again in 2021.

TAG-USA runs in tandem with the British Tag meetings and with other TAG meetings elsewhere, including the Scandinavian offshoot, Nordic TAG, and TAG Turkey.

TAG Ethos

TAG aims to be inclusive, informal, and low cost. It is run on a tight budget entirely by volunteers from the sponsoring institution and it welcomes and encourages participation from students and archaeologists working outside of academic settings. TAG in the UK is famous for its party, and we aim to rival that reputation here in the US.

There is no membership fee for TAG; participants pay a registration fee that covers the cost of the conference, the conference program and book of abstracts, and the reception and/or party. At the moment we are unable to offer scholarships, but each organizing committee works hard to provide budget accommodation and a reduced registration fee for students and part-time or unwaged scholars.

The Theoretical Archaeology Group is committed to promoting access for all at their annual conference. TAG requires that all participants, organizers, and delegates, conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times, within each and every conference venue. Queries regarding specific accessibility, harassment, and equality and diversity policies for any particular TAG meeting should be directed to the organizers of that meeting in the first instance.


Future Meetings

We encourage experimentation and innovation at our meetings - not only in archaeological theory, but also in the format and style of presentation. TAG promotes inter-disciplinarity and it also regularly includes artistic exhibits, performances and other interventions as part of its program.

We have had expressions of interest from several institutions for future conferences, and are in the process of formalizing the program for the next few years. If you would like to host TAG in the future please direct inquiries to Zoe Crossland via our online form.
